Shadows.

Blankets of the night, Sahara
From my Eat+Travel book available via ChristinaSantini.com

When your mind is dark.
Darker than the ravens that fly high above.
Only the lonely
In the night find shelter...
You hope to stumble upon paradise.

And you look directly into the sun;
Blinded by the light.
You seek into the shadows.
Surrendering to the dark side.
Once again.

It feels familiar.
It feels safe.
You have nothing to lose.
Nothing to win.
You risk nothing.
Nothing.

Terrified of exposing your naked skin.
Your cuts and bruises never heal.
Numbed from fear.
You wait.

You hope.
That you will recognize.
What you long for.
In denial.
Where you reside.
And hide.
No sunlight to warm your frozen heart.
Wrapping yourself in the blankets of the night.

...And then one stormy night those blankets are torn to shreds.
You fly away.
